Our History

Temple Genesis

The journey began in 2017 when a small group of passionate individuals came together to discuss building a Hindu temple in Christchurch. While similar attempts in the past had not materialized, the group believed that divine timing was key. They started organizing bhajans, prayers, and satsangs in homes to engage the community and build momentum for the cause.

The dream comes true

As the pandemic subsided, regular poojas and Hindu festival celebrations resumed in council halls. The Trust introduced Value Classes for children aged 5–13, offering free lessons on universal human values rooted in India’s 5,000-year-old Sanatana Dharma tradition through stories and activities.
In October, the Trust purchased an office space at Bishopdale Mall and converted it into a temple. The refurbishment was completed in just a month, and the temple was inaugurated on December 11, 2022, providing a permanent home for the deities.

Pran Prathista and the Mahakumbhabhishekham

The temple began operating daily in the evenings, hosting regular poojas and Hindu festivals throughout 2023. Recognizing the community’s growing involvement, plans were made to expand the temple. A granite idol of Lord Ganesha and a mandapam were imported to serve as the presiding deity's sanctum.
With the overwhelming support of devotees, the Pran Prathista of the Mulasthana Murti—Sri Ganesha was performed during the Maha Kumbhabishekam from September 13–15, 2024.

The Future

Looking ahead, the Trust envisions building a larger, purpose-fit Hindu temple that accommodates all deities and provides space for cultural, spiritual, and community activities. Plans include constructing a hall, kitchen, and dining area at an estimated cost of $3 million. The Trust seeks generous contributions from devotees and well-wishers to bring this vision to life.

Sri Ganesha Temple continues to serve as a beacon of spirituality, cultural heritage, and community connection for Christchurch and beyond.

The journey begins

The core group formed the Sri Ganesha Trust, which was registered as a charitable trust on May 2, 2018. The Trust imported a five-metal (Panchaloha) idol of Lord Ganesha from India for worship. Over time, generous donations and sponsorships from devotees in New Zealand, India, Malaysia, and Singapore brought other deities to the temple.
To sustain community engagement, the Trust rented council halls on the second Saturday of every month and Hindu festival days to conduct poojas and religious discourses.

Crusing through the Pandamic

The arrival of COVID-19 in February 2020 led to nationwide lockdowns beginning in March. During this challenging time, the Trust adapted by organizing online prayers, poojas, yoga, and meditation sessions via Zoom for the wellbeing of New Zealand and the global community. Weekly online Thevaram & Bhajan classes were organised for children. These initiatives provided both spiritual and mental support during the pandemic.

Conduct regular worship services for Hindu deities and spiritual masters, following traditional Hindu rituals and customs.

Temple is open every day from 7.30 P.M. to 8.30 P.M. Additionally, on Sunday, it is open from 8:30 A. M. to 10:30 A.M.
